A Walled Garden Sanctuary in Charlestown, Mayo

This large country site features a walled patio, creating a courtyard effect. The clean lines of the new build extend into the garden with a built-in kitchen and fire pit. Natural stone walls are used in contemporary forms to contrast the white plaster rendering of the house providing enclosure to the space and much needed shelter from the wind. The walled garden is treated as one space, featuring large taxus dome planting.

A statement backdrop is created with a wraparound water feature which links the main patio to an evening seating space. The corten steel of the water table is used throughout the design detailing, it is reflected in the driveway edging and in the planters.

Stepping stones to the rear of the garden lead to a sanctuary area boasting a cladden cedar outdoor sauna and shower.

Native planting is used throughout. Pinus sylvestris, birch and holly provide evergreen screening. Juniper is used to create rugged underplanting in the walled garden.
