This project is set on a sloping landscape in the heart of Greystones. Creating a design that incorporated the slope and worked with it was the intention for the project. Steps and retaining walls with cascading planting interact with the sloping landscape, facilitating greater usability of the space.
The dining area and fire pit are set on the lowest level. A relaxation space is located further up, which is accompanied by a water rill, providing soothing auditory stimulation. The panoramic views can be taken in from the higher level. At the highest point of the landscape, an astronomy area has been installed for the homeowner to take in the night’s sky. At various points on the different levels, open space is provided for activities. A slide and trampoline sit into the slope.
A series of hand selected trees feature throughout the design. They have been chosen for their form, texture, colour and seasonality. The planting scheme employs purple hues. Nepeta faassenii and verbena bonariensis provide beautiful colour and form. Recessive plants, such as calamagrostis acutiflora, buxus sempervirens and saracocca confusa, provide structure and punctuation to the scheme and a backdrop for the striking plants to be painted onto.
On the material side of things, cream porcelain is employed, this gives a light and airy feel to the design. A more rustic reclaimed brick is used in the walling.
A sophisticated lighting scheme has been implemented, which highlights certain elements of the design in the evening time.
